Daniel Turko/2-24-06/3-8...........More Cheating

I.What I found out is that most of the time when a student breaks the honor code in college, they are kicked out of that school. In other cases, students who had broken honor codes were stripped of any scholarships or even suspended from the college.

II. Today we continued with our long discussion of questions in section 2.1 in the collge life book. The main discussion today was centered around whether you should turn someone in for cheating or not. Some people in the class thought that it was not their responsibility to report people who cheated. They felt that it was the job of the cheater to come forward because the burden is on the cheater and nobody else. Also, that you should only focus on your work and perform at your hardest, ignoring those who cheat. Saying who cares what others do, if I just worry about my work I will be fine. Then, there were the people who said that they would definitely turn in cheaters. These people felt that it was not fair for others to cheat while they are working fairly. That cheaters should not always be able to get by successfully through cheating without being caught. This discussion definitely drew a fine line between people on the issue of cheating.

III. I never knew that in some cases the colleges actually review the cheating of students, considering whether they had an unfair advantage due to large class sizes, or something of that nature.

IV. I am wonder what the statistics are for students that cheat in high school and in college.

V. I have a strong opinion on what you should do if you encounter a cheater. I feel you should take no responsibility in turning them in, and leave the burden on their shoulders. You should mind only to your work and do the best that you can. And if you can not be satisfied by your hardest work alone, then you will be sucked into cheating also. Because if you can not get something through your hardest work you will ultimately resort to cheating.

Daniel Turko/ 2-22-06/ 3-7.....Cheating

I. I actually did find that all the places that had rules had all the same ones, they are.....
Rule One:
If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.

Rule Two:
You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them.

Rule Three:
I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose his compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of the date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.

Rule Four:
I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without using a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

Rule Five:
It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is "early."

Rule Six:
I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with one of my little girls, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. You might have heard about her other two sisters, but you will not look. If you make her cry, I make you cry.

Rule Seven:
As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process that can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?

Rule Eight:
The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are sofas, beds, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and my old Army Field Jacket - zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided; movies which feature power tools are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.

Rule Nine:
Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a middle-aged, gray-headed, dimwitted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and a half acre behind the house. Do not trifle with me.

Rule Ten:
Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to drift back a few years to my Army days and mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a hostile vehicle. Whenever I hear engines at night, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the weapons, probably as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveway you should exit your car with both hands in plain sight. Announce the perimeter password, relay in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, then return to your car - there is no need for you to come inside. The camouflaged face at the window is mine

II. Today during class we revisited a topic that we worked on a few weeks ago. We got back our questions for case study 2.1 in the college life book. After that, we whiteboarded and discussed the answers we all had. We got into a deep discussion, and only finished 3 questions. The main focus of the discussion was cheating and integrity of people. We first talked about honesty of people, and how important that is in places like college. Then, we talked about if there are reasons that justify cheating in certain situations. After that, we discussed the effictiveness and purpose of an honor code in schools. Thats as far as we got because everyone had a lot to say about every topic.

III. I actually found out today that a majority of people do not take the honor code seriously, and only see it as some kind of joke.

IV. What has happened at colleges when students broke the honor code?

V. I have a strong opinion when it comes to the honor code. The honor code is something that I think people should take seriously. When you sign the pledge of honor, you are saying that you did not cheat. But, if you sign your name and did cheat you have lost all respectability. How is it possible to respect someone who can not even telll the truth when it comes to something little like schoolwork.

Daniel Turko/2-16-06/3-6.....Documentaries

I. I researched on the internet, and I did not find a specific source that said there is an actual job for the study of communities. But if you think about it, the people who study different types of cultures around the world are in a way studying different communities.

II. Today in Ethics, we had a pretty fun class. Many people in the class were helping out with the wrestling tournament, so it would have been a waste to discuss new information. So instead, we ended watching more of the classes' documentaries. First, we watched the documentary about the meaning of life. To me, it did not really seem like a documentary because it was not portraying a clear message. It was just more so of an informational video on existentialism and transcedentalists. The next documentary that we watched was the one on pressure of getting into college, or making the grades. Bfeore we watched it, Britney and Jaclyn said it was bad, but I disagreed. The movie had a clear, distinct message and it was interesting. Then, we watched the documentary on high school love/relationships. This documentary was very good, but a little long. The group was able to use the techniques of deceptive filmmaking in order to get their point across. Finally, we started watching a documentary on stereotypes. This documentary was hillarious. Especially, when it showed Dunny being interviewed. I think they definitely proved that stereotypes are bad.

III. Today, I learned that there is actually a list of rules for fathers concerning the dating of their daughters. :)

IV. I am wondering of the list of rules for dating teenage daughters is an actual authentic set of rules, if it is the same all places you look.

V. I definitely had a distinct opinion when it came to the message in the stereotype documentary. I agree that stereotypes are bad. The reason that stereotypes are so bad is because they create disunity among people, and allow certain kids to be singled out.

Daniel Turko/2-14-06/3-5..... Principles of Ethics and You Part 2

I. I did found out information on what I was wondering about concerning the Danish cartoons. Those cartoons were published all the way back in October. It seems weird and sketchy that people would just begin reacting to the cartoons.

II. In class today we spent most of our time going over the previous night's homework. We whiteboarded all the answers from the Principles of Ethics and You worksheet. The topics that we went over today were communities and character growth. We discussed exactly what a community was in our opinion, and how the community is run. Also, we talked about values involved in communities. Throughout the class we went into an in-depth lesson discussing what types of communities you will encounter, and which communities you will become a part of; whether it be school, work, friends, family, etc........

III. Today, I learned that as you get older your community will constantly change. For example, you may not always be involved with your college buddies forever.

IV. After today's lesson I was pondering on an idea involving communities. I began to wonder if there are actually people whos job it is to study various communties.

V. When it comes to communities, I have a pretty strong opinion on what one is. I believe a community is a certain group of people that share the same values, and work toghether to achieve common goals.

Daniel Turko/ 2-10-06/3-4..........Danish Cartoon

I.So far the Danish government has kept quite quiet when it comes to the Mohammad cartoons. The PM of Denmark has not condemned the cartoons or stuck behind the cartoonist's freedom of press. Many Muslims are angered by this response, because they clearly want him to condemn the cartoons.

II. The main topic of discussion in today's class involved the conflict over the Danish cartoonist publishing cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed. The belief of many Muslims is that there shall be no depictions of the prophet Mohammed. Recently, these cartoons have sparked many violent protests in Arab nations. The main dispute of this cartoon is whether the Cartoonist had the right to publish them or if the cartoonist went way to far offending a whole religion. We got into many discussionsa involving freedom of speech (press), double standards, & respect for religion. We also watched many clips of footage discussing the cartoon situation and read articles about it. Also, we actually got to see the cartoons that had offended so many. One of the pieces of footage we watched were from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In the clip they just made fun of all the violence that has erupted over a cartoon. Once the discussion was over, watched one of the documentaries about Christmas. We only watched a little of it, but it was maybe on the boring side(not to say that my group's wasn't). :)

III. The main cartoon offending so many Muslims, was a picture of the prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb on his head instead of a turban.

IV. I want to know exactly when the cartoons depicting Mohammad were published. I wonder why all these people have just began rioting.

V. I have a distinct opinion when it comes to the cartoon issue. My belief is that the cartoonist who published the cartoons had the freedom to make the cartoons. I believe that the rioters, or those offended are definitely overreacting in this situation. They need to learn to respect the freedom of others. Also, they are going back and publishing cartoons of the holocaust...and you do not see the whole country of Israel rioting.

Daniel Turko/2-8-06/3-3.....Principles of Ethics and You

I. I actually did find out how Michael and Kevin were able to get the interviews for their documentary. They used the technique of phantom question. They actually asked the people about The Rising Tides, they asked what they thought about Hurricane Katrina.

II. Today during class we started out with last night's homework. Mr. Couillard went around and checked the worksheets. We then whiteboarded and answered all the questions to that homework, Principles of Ethics and You. The topics covered in this worksheet were the greatest good, equal respect and the golden rule, and relationships. We ended up going into deep analysis of each topic. One of the topics we talked about for a while was, "what is good?" It was debated on whether good is doing something that has a positive outcome or if its doing something you would like done for you.....etc. After the discussion ended, we were able to watch the end of Michael and Kevin's movie. I thought that the movie was very funny and interesting. It was an excellent movie and the only flaw in it was that on some interviews, they prolonged it, and it got kind of boring. Overall, it was a great class.

III. Today I learned an interesting fact concerning the problem over the Danish catoonist's portrayal of Mohammad. I found out that in retaliation an Iranian newspaper is going to print cartoons about the Holocaust. But that is strange, since Irans leader believes that the Holocaust never happened.

IV. I would like to know what the Danish Goverment's stance is concerning the cartoon and rioting.

V. I had a distinct opinion when we talked about what is "good" in class. I believe that good is something that has positive outcomes for any person. Whether you be helping 1 person or 1 billion people, an action that follows with positive outcome is definitely "good."

Daniel Turko/ 2-6-06/3-2/........Turn It in & a Documentary

I. In the movie Michael Moore Hates America, Mooe is asked if he will do an interview for the movie. Moore then says that he only appears in his own movies. Though, Michael Moore lied because he has appeared in several movies that were not his, i.e. Fever Pitch. So Moore lied.

II. Today we started off by going over the Turnitin.com accounts we created and we talked about how the web site would be used. The internet site will be used for us to turn in our assignments and homework over the internet. We then took turns in our groups accessing our accounts and completing a trial assignment. We just typed a random paper to Mr. Couillard using the site to see if it worked properly. After that we watched one of the classes' documentaries. It was Michael and Kevin's documentary. It was actually a mockumentary about a boy band going through stardom and downfall. We did not finish it though. So far, it is hillarious.

III. I learned today that the Turnitin.com web site has a special feature. It can check your assignments to track down any plaigirism. I thought it was kinda neat.

IV. I wonder how Kevin and Michael really interviewed the random people that were in their movie. I wonder when they asked them when the people were sayin it was horrible (reffering to incidents in The Rising Tides).

V. One thing this class prompted me to think about was the increasing use of the internet in our assignments. I think the turnitin.com is a cool service, but I also think some students will abuse it. I think they will make up excuses like, "My internet broke," in order to escape completing assignments.

Daniel Turko/ 2-2-06/3-1......MM HATES AMERICA

I. N/A

II. Today, we started out the class with Mr. Coulliard showing us a box and whisker plot of the classes exam, 9 weeks, and semester grades. Overall, the grades looked pretty good. Then we went on to watching the movie, Michael Moore Hates America. We were able to finish watching the movie today. At the end of the movie, Mike Wilson goes to New York City for one last try at a Michael Moore interview. Though, like always, Michael Moore is "elusive" and nowhere to be found. After the movie, we discussed the ethicality of the movie. Was Mike Wilson really making a true and ethical documentary unlike Moore. Once we were finished discussing, we got to see our grades. I got both A's on my nine weeks and semester grades, and i got a B+ on my exam. It was a 93.4, only a tenth of a point fron an A! DARN!

III. That Michael Moore is never actually interviewed in the movie.

IV. I want to know how many documentaries or movies Moore has been in besides his since he said he only appears in his own movies.

V. When we discussed how ethical Michael Moore Hates Ameerica was, I had a distinct opinion. I felt as if the movie was very ethical. It looked as if Wilson tried his best to always be honest with interviewes and not cut up interviews to make his point.
